Quartz is a mineral in a broad sense with similar chemical composition. Quartz can be divided into two main subsets. Crystalline (macro-crystalline), the variety is generally associated with quartz. This group includes Quartz, Amethyst, Smoky Quartz, Cat's eye Quartz others. The second group are polycrystalline (micro-crystalline), and have in turn several subgroups. Here we find the groups Chalcedony, Jasper, Quartzites and silicate replacements. Known examples here are Agate, Carnelian and different varieties of jasper and Tiger’s eye. There are also other Quartz which consist of the Opal Group.

 

The chamelion of gemstones because of its many colours and colour combinations. Many varities of tourmaline have their own names. Multicolour tourmalines are very sought after and expensive. One example is the form called Watermelon tourmaline wich we also at Riddgem is very attracted to. Tourmaline is know already from antiquity Mediterranean region. But was as late as 1700 started to be imported to Holland from Sri Lanka and then have its sinhalese name turmali wich means stone with many colours.
