Larvikite is an intrusive deep rock. The corresponding surface rock is rhombic porphyry, which is common in the Oslo field. Lavikite consists mainly of alkali feldspar and plagioclase. Minor amounts of biotite, augite, nepheline, magnetite, ilmenite, olivine and quartz may be present.

Larvikite has a bluish color spectrum that is due to light refraction in microscopic lamellae of plagioclase in the alkali feldspar (the Schiller effect). The rock thus acquires a special shine that makes it attractive as an ornamental and building stone.
