Fluorescence is an important diagnostic property of many gemstones and minerals. When a stone is exposed to ultraviolet radiation, certain substances in the material can absorb the UV energy and emit visible light - the stone fluoresces.
The Fable FUV-4B offers two of the wavelengths traditionally used in gemology:
- LW – long-wave UV-A, 365 nm
Used, among other things, to observe fluorescence in diamonds, rubies and many other gemstones and minerals.
- SW – short-wave UV-C, 253.7 nm Provides additional diagnostic information because a gemstone can react completely differently under short-wave than under long-wave UV light.
By comparing the reaction of the stone under LW and SW, the gemologist can obtain valuable information when identifying and examining natural, synthetic and imitation materials. However, UV fluorescence should be used in conjunction with other gemological tests and is usually not sufficient on its own for a confident identification.
Fascinating even for the curious
UV light is not only useful in a gemological laboratory. It is also an easy and fascinating way to examine your own stone collection.
For example, many natural rubies can exhibit an intense red fluorescence under long-wave UV light, while some diamonds fluoresce clearly – often blue. However, the reaction varies depending on the chemical composition and origin of the stone, and some specimens show little or no fluorescence at all.

FUV-4B – the UV lamp itself
- This is the Fable FUV-4B, i.e. the UV lamp itself without an observation darkroom. The lamp can be used separately in a dark room and is particularly practical when examining larger stones and mineral samples.
- For easier and more controlled gemological examination, RIDDGEM also sells the lamp together with an observation darkroom.
- RIDDGEM recommends the complete set for regular gemological use.
Important when using
• Avoid ambient light when observing – a dark room provides clearer fluorescence.
• When examining larger stones, the lamp can be used separately from the observation box.
• Never look directly into the UV light source.
• Avoid exposing skin and hands to short-wave UV-C light.
• Always turn off the lamp after completing the examination.
Short-wave UV-C versus long-wave UV-A
A stone does not have to react in the same way under both wavelengths. For example, it can fluoresce strongly under LW, weakly under SW – or vice versa. The difference between the reactions can provide the gemologist with additional diagnostic information.
LW 365 nm is long-wave UV-A and is often used as the first fluorescence test.
SW 253.7 nm is short-wave UV-C and can provide other reactions that complement the observation under LW.
That is why a UV lamp with both LW and SW, like the Fable FUV-4B, is significantly more useful for gemological work than a regular UV lamp with only one wavelength.
