The Spanish conquerors of Central and and South America gave this stone the name piedra de ijada or hip stone because it was regarded as a protection and also cure for kidney disorders  In prehistoric times jade was often used for tools or wepons, due to it’s hardness. In Central America - pre-Columbian era - jade was more highly regarded than gold. Sadly the Spanish conquest put an end to the art of jade carving in America.
This art was never interrupted, in China. Traditionally only jade from China was used but since 1750 imported jadeite from Myanmar has been used.  A Jadite, Imperial jade from Myanmar, coloured emerald-green with chromium, translucent to almost transparent,  is the most desired jade of all.
