Banded iron ore occurs in the oldest rocks on Earth, formed over 3,000 million years ago with a maximum occurrence around 2,500 million years ago. The formations consist of chemical deposits of iron oxide (magnetite or hematite) interspersed with bands of shale and chert. Banded iron ore is formed when oxygen released by photosynthetic cyanobacteria combines with dissolved iron to form insoluble iron oxide. The iron oxide has been precipitated on the seafloor, which consisted of anoxic clay that formed shale and microcrystalline quartz.
