Scales Instrument

A generic image

Digital gem scales are specialized precision instruments used by jewelers, gemologists, and collectors to weigh very small and valuable objects.

Here is a quick guide to what you need to know about these scales:

Units of Measurement and Accuracy

  • When it comes to gemstones, specific units are used that require very high resolution, often with an accuracy of between (0.001) and (0.01) carats:
  • Carat (ct): The most common unit for gemstones, with 1 ct equaling (0.2) grams (or (200) mg).
  • Other Units: Most scales can also display results in grams (g), grains (gn), ounces (oz), and pennyweight (dwt).

Key Features and Technology

  • Calibration: Gemstone scales are extremely sensitive. Most have automatic calibration to accurately weigh according to air pressure and temperature. They often come with an accurate calibration weight.
  • Wind protection: Since even the slightest draft can affect the weight of a loose stone, scales are often equipped with a protective glass cover.
  • TARE function: Allows you to zero the scale's display with an empty container (e.g. a metal or silicone gemstone cup) on the weighing plate, so that you only weigh the stone itself.
  • Counting feature: Useful if you have a batch of identical smaller stones and want to count the total number by weighing the entire batch.
