Trilobites are an extinct marine animal group that lived during the Cambrian to Permian periods (about 520–250 million years ago), i.e. for almost 300 million years. The only traces of trilobites that exist today are fossils and trace fossils. Trilobites belonged to the arthropods and were a very species-rich group: there are about 4,500 genera described with an estimated 50,000 species.
