Our policy regarding images

We prioritize high-quality photography to ensure our customers see the beauty of each gemstone with the utmost clarity and accuracy, as if they were looking at the real gem with their own eyes. We use advanced cameras equipped with professional lenses to capture every detail of the gemstone, from its shape and faceting to its true color. Due to the magnifying power of our macro lenses and the exceptional quality of our cameras, you may notice inclusions more clearly in our images than with the naked eye. This level of detail allows for complete transparency, ensuring that you can examine the gemstone carefully before making a purchase. Our studio is designed to replicate natural daylight conditions.

1) Our aim is to publish an image of the gemstone that is as true to life as possible.
However, luster, colours and other variables are difficult to reproduce with a camera.
These variables will also differ depending on your graphics hardware, resolution and screen on your computer.

2) We mostly use our own images. In many cases we buy pictures from external photograph usually administered by our suppliers. Unique stones have their own unique image.
In many case we buy lots of stone of the same kind and the approximate size. In such cases when we have many of the same type of stone, we use a representative image of that type. If this is the case it’s always stated in under ‘Description’.

3) Our images are protected under copyright law. We agree for customers to download the picture of stones they bought, for whatever they choose to use. For other use of our pictures you can buy the right of use under ‘Accessories’ > ‘Other’.

More information and ongoing publishing you can see in our blog http://riddgem.se/blogg/ (only Swedish at this time) where we write about anything concerning gemstones.

General information about gemstone treatment

Treatment of diamonds

There are various techniques for treating Diamonds. A common and accepted method is colour treatment by exposing diamonds to radiation, called irradiation. This method gives stronger and more even colour. Black diamonds are often treated with this method to give them an even black colour. The term for this is ‘colour enhanced’. The term ‘fancy’ is often used for coloured diamonds. Opinions vary on the correctness of using this term in reference to colour enhanced diamonds. Naturally coloured diamonds in the ‘fancy’ category such as blue, red, pink and other clear colours are incredibly rare and very expensive, often more expensive than high quality white diamonds. Colour enhanced diamonds are inexpensive in comparison. Colour enhanced diamonds have an even colour that penetrates the whole gem. All our diamonds under the category ‘Colored’ are treated in this way. Another important treatment method for diamonds is clarity enhancement. One way is to cut small holes with a laser to remove inclusions and then filling these with glass or other material. This treatment will lower the value of the gem stone.

As far as synthetic diamonds are concerned, they was rare on the market until reacently. Nowdays it is common with syntetic diamonds of all sizes, qualities and colours. Usually they are refered to as  "Lab Grown Diamonds".  We in Riddgem therefore nowdays purchase only from established distributors in Antwerpen. Who can garantee natural produced diamonds within Kimberley Process. And therefore approved according to EU:s regulations 2368/2002  There are also so called ‘simultants’ which can be Zircon, Cubic Zirconia amongst others. These are easily identifiable with instruments and density measurement.

Treatment of Sapphires/Rubies

There are various treatments for the Corundum family gemstones Sapphire and Ruby. Many are accepted while others less desirable. Virtually all gems in this group are heat treated, which is deemed acceptable.  Rubies are often treated with a so called flux healing method. This has become evident in later years. Completely untreated material commands a high price and can only be ascertained by purchasing certified gems.

As well as heat treatment there is heat treatment with addition of chemicals, for instance Beryllium. This gives higher purity and clearer colours. Diffusion treatment is regarded as a doubtful method by many. In some cases it is however acceptable, especially in the case of Starsapphires and Starrubies. For the Corundums there are synthetic varieties that are difficult to distinguish from genuine gemstones. There are also simulants and duplicates. We do not trade in synthetic gemstones.

Treatment of Emeralds

Treatment of Emeralds with Cedar oil is an accepted method and most Emeralds are treated with this method. Sometimes irregularities are filled with hardeners and other substances which reduces the value of the gemstone.

Treatment of other gemstones

Regarding other gemstones, various treatments are used for certain types, while for others no treatment at all is used.

Topaz is a large group that is heat treated and in some cases, irradiated to get better clarity and colour. Concerning Topaz it’s worth mentioning that Mystic Topaz is a diffusion treated gemstone, which is almost self evident. It has a thin, hardened layer that gives this particular colour. Other Topaz’s can be treated with this technique. This description is also applicable to Quartz.

Among the rarely treated gemstones are Tourmaline and various types of Garnet.
There are synthetic varieties that are difficult to distinguish from genuine gemstones. There are also simulants and duplicates. Riddgem does not trade in synthetic gemstones.
