Gemological tweezers are specially designed precision tools used to inspect, sort, and grade loose gemstones and diamonds. They are significantly different from regular tweezers for beauty care or hobbies.
Why not use your fingers? Oils and salts from the skin leave marks that can distort the color and clarity of a gemstone, making it difficult to accurately assess its quality under a microscope, loupe, or other instrument.
Specialized tips
To avoid damaging the stones, the tips are designed in specific ways:
- Grooved (Knurled) tips: Have small notches that lock the girdle (waist) of the stone securely in place without it slipping. Very common when louping.
- Smooth (Round/Fine) tips: Often used for very fragile stones or when you want to avoid the slightest mark on the facets of the stone.
- Lock-pick/Claw tools: Usually have 3 or 4 small metal claws that are pushed forward by a spring. Perfect for securely gripping and displaying a stone.
