Pyrrhotite consists of a compound of iron (Fe) and sulfur (S). The mineral affects the compass needle somewhat, hence the name. This applies especially to the monoclinic 4C polytype with the composition Fe7S8. Pyrrhotite often contains nickel in slightly larger quantities and is then usually mined as nickel ore. Often much of the nickel is present as inclusions of pentlandite (or other nickel minerals) but smaller amounts of nickel can also be found in solid solution in the Pyrrhotite.

Magnetic Pyrite – also called pyrrhotite in healing (Source: ChatGPT)
Magnetic Pyrite is an iron sulfide that sometimes has magnetic properties. In crystal healing and energy work, it is not as common as, for example, pyrite or hematite, but it is still attributed with several interesting properties.
Energy and magnetism
- Because it is often magnetic, it is believed to be able to attract what you focus on – be it energy, opportunities or insights.
- It is said to be able to “charge up” other stones and strengthen the energy flow in the body.
For some, it is used to balance the body’s electromagnetic field and protect against energy exhaustion.
Vitality and motivation
- Magnetic pyrite is connected to the solar plexus chakra (personal power, willpower).
- It is believed to strengthen courage, self-esteem and the ability to take initiative.
- Its warm metallic sheen and fiery energy are sometimes associated with igniting “the inner fire” – passion, motivation and creativity.
Shadow Work and Release
- Because it is an iron sulfide (iron + sulfur), some healers believe it helps release old patterns, especially those that hold us back in low energy or self-criticism.
- Sulfur stands in esoteric tradition for purification and transformation, so lodestone is sometimes used in shadow work or energy clearing.
Grounding and Protection
- Like other iron-rich minerals, it is experienced as grounding and stabilizing.
- It can be used to calm anxiety and create a sense of inner strength.
