A Hearts & Arrows loupe (often also called H&A Viewer) is a specialized optical instrument used to assess the three-dimensional symmetry and precision of round brilliant cut diamonds. It reveals how perfectly the cutter has managed to align the diamond's 57 or 58 facets.

Here's what you need to know about the tool and its examination of cut quality:

How the loupe worksThe loupe is equipped with color filters (often red or blue) or special reflectors and usually has (10 times) magnification. It blocks unwanted stray light and highlights how light is refracted and reflected through the stone:

• From the top (table side): A perfectly cut diamond shows a sharp pattern of 8 symmetrical arrows.
• From the bottom (pavilion): When the stone is turned upside down, 8 clear and heart-shaped patterns are visible.

What it says about the cut quality:

• The pattern only occurs when a diamond is cut with exceptional "optical precision".
• Shows "Super Ideal": The H&A pattern is proof that the diamond belongs to the absolute top class of Ideal Cut.
• Reveals flaws: The slightest skew, incorrect angles or poor alignment of an individual facet causes the pattern to be broken. Then you see broken hearts or arrows that do not fit together correctly.
• Maximized brilliance: The extreme symmetry allows the diamond to make maximum use of light, resulting in outstanding brilliance (white light), fire (rainbow colors) and scintillation (sparkles).
