A jeweler's loupe (loupe) is a gemologist's most important hand tool. It is used to quickly inspect the internal and external features of gemstones. For professional use, a 10x magnification and a color-corrected triplet lens are standard, allowing for the detection of inclusions and cut details without optical distortions.

Tip: Hold the loupe close to your eye and instead move the stone towards the loupe until the image is in precise focus. This provides the steadiest hand and best sharpness.

Characteristics of a good gemological loupe

  • Magnification: The industry standard is 10x. Higher magnifications (such as 20x or 30x) can introduce too much shake and optical refractive errors, making them difficult to use hand-held.
  • Triplet lens: A high-quality loupe should consist of three joined lenses (a triplet) that correct for chromatic aberration (color dispersion) and spherical aberration. This ensures a sharp image from edge to edge with accurate colors.
  • Achromatic and Aplanatic: These designations mean that the lenses are designed to provide maximum sharpness and maintain straight lines without distortion.

Areas of use

  • Inclusion identification: The loupe allows you to distinguish cracks, fluid bubbles, mineral crystals and growth lines in the stone. This helps to distinguish natural stones from synthetic or glass imitations.
  • Cut quality (Proportions): Helps to assess whether the facets are symmetrical and polished correctly.
  • Damage and wear: Detects nicks, scratches or cracks along the edges of the facets.
  • Hallmarks: Often used to read very small metal stamps (karat) inside jewelry.
