Fluorescence is an important diagnostic property of many gemstones and minerals. When exposed to ultraviolet radiation, certain substances within a material may absorb UV energy and emit visible light – causing the gemstone to fluoresce.

The Fable FUV-200A uses shortwave UV-C at approximately 254 nm and is designed as a compact portable observation instrument. It is a practical gemological tool when fluorescence needs to be examined without using a larger stationary UV unit.

• Different gemstones may display very different fluorescence depending on factors such as their chemical composition, trace elements and internal structure.
