Information

Possibilities for Confusion

Garnets can be confused with many gemstones due to the variations in colour that Garnets come in. As an example he red variant can easily be confused with ruby, green with emerald and so on.

Treatments

Normally Garnets are not treated. There have been rumours of heat treatment, irradiation and diffusion. There is probably treatment of especially more expensive garnet types such as Demantoid but there is a greater likelihood of encountering outright fakes and simulants.

Suitable instruments for Id

Polariscope is important and useful because garnets have cubic crystal form and are Isotropic. Consider, however, that it’s the same for Spinel. Many similar gemstones can be excluded by examination with a polariscope.

Refractometer is also an important tool as garnets do not have birefringence and often have a very high refractive index.

Hydrostatic weighing to measure density as garnets often have high values. These, however tend to vary greatly depending on the chemical composition.
Microscope / Loupe are always useful and several garnet varieties have very specific inclusions. A good example of this is demantoid and its "Horsetail" inclusion which virtually provide a diagnostic test for this gemstone.

Known deposits

Large group with many deposits. Rare varieties may be available in only a few places. Thus, Tsavorite only found in Tsavo, Kenya, with a few exceptions.

Miscellaneous

Garnets as a group are very large and divided into two main groups, Pyralspite and Ugrandite.

These groupes are further divided into sub-groups. For Pyralspite these are Pyrope, Almandite and Spessartite. Ugrandite have subgroups Grossular, Andradite and Uvarovite.

Furthermore, mixing or blending of "subset varieties" are common, where Rhodolite is an example of the garnet type between Pyrope and Almandite. To describe garnets as a type a general chemical formula is used.

X3Y2 (SiO4) 3

Where X may be Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe (affecting color and density)

Where Y may be Al, Fe, Cr (affecting color and density)

Color changing garnet occur both as its own type and as a variant of other types, which in turn may be variant of a "subset species". At Riddgem we have such a complexvariant in the form of "color-changing malaya garnet." See further down.
