Emerald is the green variety of beryl. It is the most well known and valuable of the green gemstones. Its beautiful green colour together with its durability and rareness makes it one of the most expensive gemstones. Deep green is the most sought after colour. In general, it applies that the bleaker the colour, the lesser the value of the gemstone. Very pale green beryl is not called ‘emerald’ but green beryl. Apart from emerald, beryl can be found in other important gemstone varieties such as blue aquamarine, pink morganite and green-yellow heliodor/golden beryl. Goshenite is white/colourless.
Flawless emerald is very rare and has a high value. Some prefer gemstones with small faults rather than flawless as it is a sign of authenticity. Colombian emerald has traditionally held the highest quality and best colour but sources in Zambia are also producing deep green emerald of high quality. Despite its hardness, emerald is a brittle gemstone. Hard blows or temperature fluctuations can cause internal fractures. Emeralds that have been treated to hide internal flaws should never be cleaned with ultra sound. Neither should they be cleaned with regular soap or detergent. This can cause oil treatment to be removed causing the flaws to become visible.

Possibilities for Confusion
Tsavorite, Chrome Diopside, Tourmaline, Sapphire, Glass and other green varities of gemstones
Treatments
Almost all emeralds are treated with oil using cedar tree oil, that is the classic way. There are large amounts of synthetic emerald on the market. Hydrothermal process’ are used used as well as flux-fusion process’ and other techniques. It is also possible to produce aquamarine and other beryl synthetically but this is regarded as uneconomical and instead synthetic corundum is used, which is cheaper.
Instruments for identification
Polariscopes to determine crystal form and separate from a number of other possible gemstones.
Microscope / Loupe to examine inclusions, which may give an indication also of origin.
The refractive index and density are very important data which are determined by refractometer and hydrostatic weighing.
Judging colour tone and intensity can help in distinguishing emerald from green beryl, although these limits are not exact.
Deposits
Deposits are found in Colombi, Brazil, Zambia and Russia.
Miscellaneous
Previously, as a rule, a beryl that is green must contain chromium which gives a reading in chelsea filter. Nowdays there is no such rule and also green beryl with Va and Fe is considered to be emerald if just green enough. Stones wich give no indication in a chelsea filter.
